Welcome to the madness, the utter insensibility, the wretched excess of my first car build……
Well, it’s probably not that wretched or excessive, but it is the first car I’ve completely pulled apart and rebuilt from the ground up. It’s been seven (yep, seven!) years of learning, buying new tools, learning new skills, making parts, doing things others have done, and doing a thing or two no one has ever done on a car before. Heh – all of us car guys have to say that last one! Everyone except the resto crowd…………
I started off with a mostly pristine 1986 Pontiac Fiero SE with a V6, 4 speed, and 78k miles on it. I ended up with a 1986/1988 Fiero GT with a Corvette V8 engine, 5 speed, Corvette brakes, custom front and rear suspension, custom interior, a few updates to the exterior, and yes, a few custom parts that had to be made for the very first time. Ever!
............before and after pics. Yes, it's the same car!
Would I trade the experience? Never….
Would I do it again? Again, never! Too many other cars, too little time.
Would I sell the Fiero? If the right buyer came up with the right amount of cash on the right day, sure – it’d be out of here in a heartbeat! It would, though, have to be a silly amount of cash to cover the Lotus Elise I have my eye on…………. or a Miata with a botched engine swap, or an original Mini with a more modern driveline, or the………. Like I said, too many other cars, too little time.
